EW panel work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past week has seen some great progress on the panel front.<\/p>\n<p>First up is the nearly completed IFF panel.\u00a0 After breaking a few tools due to feeding too fast, I was finally able to get the parts for the IFF mounting plate cut:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_121\" style=\"width: 394px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/iff-panel-parts1_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121\" class=\"size-full wp-image-121\" title=\"iff-panel-parts1_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/iff-panel-parts1_sm.jpg\" alt=\"Edge-lit panel, main mounting plate and the connector mounting plate.\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edge-lit panel, main mounting plate and the connector mounting plate.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The connector mounting plate is designed to accept the two DB25 connectors that are needed to wire up this panel.\u00a0 The plate is connected to the main part by two 4&#8243; hex standoffs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are some pics of the connector plate being cut &#8211; the bit looks stopped, but is actually spinning at 6600 RPM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-116\" title=\"connector-mounting-plate_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate_sm.jpg\" alt=\"connector-mounting-plate_sm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate2_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-113\" title=\"connector-mounting-plate2_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate2_sm.jpg\" alt=\"connector-mounting-plate2_sm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate3_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-114\" title=\"connector-mounting-plate3_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate3_sm.jpg\" alt=\"connector-mounting-plate3_sm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate4_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-115\" title=\"connector-mounting-plate4_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/connector-mounting-plate4_sm.jpg\" alt=\"connector-mounting-plate4_sm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The little tube with the white tip is a ball-inflator needle connected to an air-compressor.\u00a0 It blows air at 90psi\u00a0 on the cutter to keep it cool.\u00a0 This works for small bits in lieu of using a flood coolant.\u00a0 The downside is that there are little aluminum chips <em>everywhere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s what the main panel looks like with all the parts mounted:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/iff-panel-switches_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-122\" title=\"iff-panel-switches_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/iff-panel-switches_sm.jpg\" alt=\"iff-panel-switches_sm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The three locking toggle switches are not the correct parts &#8211; the lock style is correct, but the bat handles are not.\u00a0 You can see what the correct toggle switches look like in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/?p=70#more-70\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> post.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to hold off on final assembly for a little while to see if I can find the right switches.\u00a0 The other issue is the fit for the rotary wheel switches.\u00a0 It knocks up against the toggle switch next to it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got a different unit that has a bit of a narrower profile that I&#8217;ll be trying this week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s what it looks like with the edge-lit panel installed:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/iff-panel-assembled_dm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-120\" title=\"iff-panel-assembled_dm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/iff-panel-assembled_dm.jpg\" alt=\"iff-panel-assembled_dm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The REPLY indicator came out really nice.\u00a0 There are some marks from the honeycomb grid in the laser, but they can be buffed out easily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I also got the edge-lit panel for the EW (Electronic Warfare) completed, as well as it&#8217;s mounting plate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/ew_panel_parts_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-119\" title=\"ew_panel_parts_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/ew_panel_parts_sm.jpg\" alt=\"ew_panel_parts_sm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The picture above shows the edge-lit panel blank right off the &#8216;bot.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve cut pockets in the panel to accomodate the switch nuts and the LEDs that will be used for the internal lighting.\u00a0 From here, the blank goes into the laser for final cutting:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/ew_panel_parts2_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-118\" title=\"ew_panel_parts2_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/ew_panel_parts2_sm.jpg\" alt=\"ew_panel_parts2_sm\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is the panel right off the laser.\u00a0 As you can see, the switch holes are a bit off center from the back pocketing.\u00a0 This is due to a slight alignment issue between the ShopBot and the laser engraver that I haven&#8217;t quite got sorted out yet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, here&#8217;s the EW panel after final paint &amp;
