{"id":137,"date":"2009-07-22T20:02:19","date_gmt":"2009-07-23T03:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/?p=137"},"modified":"2009-07-23T07:58:52","modified_gmt":"2009-07-23T14:58:52","slug":"ew-panel-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/?p=137","title":{"rendered":"EW panel completed&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a number of delays, I finally got the EW panel completed!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the panel assembly looks like:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_140\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_wired1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140\" class=\"size-full wp-image-140\" title=\"ew_panel_wired1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_wired1.jpg\" alt=\"edge on view of EW panel\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">edge on view of EW panel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You&#8217;ll notice that I&#8217;ve abandoned the tiny nylon wire ties in favor of waxed lacing cord.\u00a0 It looks a _lot_ nicer and much more &#8220;authentic&#8221;.\u00a0 Waxed lacing cord is used on &#8220;real&#8221; panels in both commercial simulators and flying aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_141\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_wired2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141\" title=\"ew_panel_wired2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_wired2.jpg\" alt=\"rear view of the EW panel\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">rear view of the EW panel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is the first panel where I&#8217;m using LED lighting.\u00a0 I&#8217;m using three &#8220;warm white&#8221; 180 degree FOV LEDs to illuminate the panel with.\u00a0 This allows me to skip the PCB that would be normally present to hold the 5v grain of rice bulbs that are used to illuminate a Type 5 panel.\u00a0\u00a0 Each LED is held in place with hot glue.\u00a0 Not the prettiest method, but it gets the job done.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_138\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_wired4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138\" class=\"size-full wp-image-138\" title=\"ew_panel_wired4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_wired4.jpg\" alt=\"Panel with light plate in the foreground\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panel with light plate in the foreground<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This panel is just a tad bit &#8220;under-lit&#8221;.\u00a0 I only used 3 LEDs where it probably would&#8217;ve been better if I had used 4 or 5 of them.\u00a0 This panel is (so far) the most expensive from-scratch panel I&#8217;ve built.\u00a0 The three switches were north of $40 each!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_installed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-139\" title=\"ew_panel_installed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/ew_panel_installed.jpg\" alt=\"ew_panel_installed\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is where the panel lives!\u00a0 The panel directly above is the APG-70 radar control panel and the formation light and radio panels can be seen to the right.<\/p>\n<p>There are only two panels left that I need to build from scratch &#8211; the AAI and FDL Mode Control panels.\u00a0 I&#8217;m excited. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>In doing some digging, I found out a little bit about the PODS switch.<\/p>\n<p>The PODS switch controls any external jamming pods that are mounted to the F-15.\u00a0 For the attached pod to operate, the PODS switch must be in the XMIT position and there must be no weight on the wheels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a number of delays, I finally got the EW panel completed!
