{"id":242,"date":"2012-11-01T14:58:20","date_gmt":"2012-11-01T21:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/?p=242"},"modified":"2012-11-20T10:04:29","modified_gmt":"2012-11-20T17:04:29","slug":"canopy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/?p=242","title":{"rendered":"Canopy!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>St. Roger, the patron saint of wayward aircraft bits delivered unto me a windscreen and canopy last night!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/canopy-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-243\" title=\"canopy-1\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/_d_improd_\/canopy-1_f_improf_641x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"641\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, it&#8217;s pretty rough.\u00a0 We figure it was either ejected or purposely damaged for whatever reason.\u00a0 It CAN be salvaged however.<\/p>\n<p>Finding a replacement glass section (lexan actually) is essentially impossible.\u00a0 That is ok however, because since I don&#8217;t have the part of the fuselage where the hinge mounted, I really can&#8217;t make it an articulating canopy anyway.<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;ll do is remove the broken lexan parts and then mount the canopy in the closed &amp; locked position to the F-15.\u00a0 Without the forward canopy glass there, you can just step over the rail to get into the cockpit.<\/p>\n<p>The canopy is also bent a bit in the middle, but I&#8217;m sure I can straighten it out well enough to get it installed.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll have to fabricate a replacement trim strip as the one on the left is broken where the canopy is bent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/canopy-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-244\" title=\"canopy-2\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/_d_improd_\/canopy-2_f_improf_640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The good news is that the mounts for the compass and lock\/shoot lights are still in place.\u00a0 The side handles are present as well.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t wait to get this thing fixed and installed!\u00a0 It&#8217;s gonna look kind of odd without the forward glass, but who cares!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a shot of the new windscreen:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.f15sim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/windscreen-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-245\" title=\"windscreen-1\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/_d_improd_\/windscreen-1_f_improf_640x425.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The windscreen has a few gouges in it, but it&#8217;s actually in a lot better shape than the A model windscreen that came with the cockpit when I originally got it.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to test some Novus polish I have to see how well it works fixing some of the lighter scratches.\u00a0 I think Novus also makes a fill that will handle the deeper gouges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[Update: 20Nov12]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Matt who sent me a link to a Craigslist ad for an F-15 canopy, it looks like I may get it.\u00a0 I&#8217;m working on making arrangements with the seller right now.\u00a0 How&#8217;s that for cool? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>I also got the images resized thanks to a new plugin I found for WordPress called ImagePro.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St. Roger, the patron saint of wayward aircraft bits delivered unto me a windscreen and canopy last night! &nbsp; As you can see, it&#8217;s pretty rough.\u00a0 We figure it was either ejected or purposely damaged for whatever reason.\u00a0 It CAN be salvaged however.
